hi....i want to change my showerhead, but i can't, for the life of me, unscrew it. i've tried with 2 wrenches and it doesn't even budge. i think i've even scraped up the side of the nut because it's too tight. it looks like there is a white seal in the threads. any advice on how to get this darn thing off? thanks in advance.

You must be careful when doing this as you do not want to loosen the pipe joints behind the wall. Make sure you use one wrench to "back up" the the wrench you are using to twist off the shower head. Place the backup wrench on the pipe behind the head and apply pressure in a clockwise direction. Now with the wrench on the shower head turn the wrench in a counter clockwise direction. If it will not loosen perhaps you need a longer wrench to get more leverage. Use a pipe wrench, they tighten as you apply pressure. Hope it works for you.

I do believe the 18" pipe wrenches are overkill and they will leave scar marks on your shower arm. Unscrew the shower arm and replace it too. The shower arm is the arm coming from the wall that your shower head screws to. It's screwed into what is called a drop-eared 90 and the 90 should be screwed to a 2x4 in the wall. Put pliers on the shower arm as close to the wall as possible and turn it to the left.....I've never heard nor seen of a shower head turning clockwise to loosen it so if I were you I wouldnt try that...

Best in your case yo consider removing the inlet stem,,,head and all, then rplace the stem, and choose any shower head in your design plan. Since you've already caused some OOOPS, use a Vice Grip to remove.

To reinstall; especially if the new stem is plated, use the same tool , but with duct tape or some such over the teeth. Also use a teflon tape or plumbing putty on the thread end that goes into the wall. Use teflon tape on the threaded end that accepts the new shower head.

the white stuff is probably Teflon tape used on most joints. Could be calcium if it leaked too.
Put a soft gripper thing like used for opening jars and stuff between the wrench and shower head so as not to scratch. Sometimes a rag will work.

Bigger wrench like one person said. Get up above it for leverage. Tap on it a bit to loosen deposits.

Try a few drops of oil... Then attempt after some more time. If it still doesn't work, ask someone else

It sounds like you're doing it right. I changed mine the same way. Perhaps you just need a big guy to really force it. ...or bigger wrenches
