Maurice Richard's Habs. Five consecutive Cups. Best championship run in all of professional sports because no team has ever come close. Well...maybe the Bulls if Jordan didn't retire so early and then come back.

Best forever 500 hockey team in history, the Hartford Whalers.
Do you mean strictly wins and Stanley Cup titles, then I'd probably have to say one of the Canadiens teams of the 70's. The Canadiens of 1976-78 broke records for most wins in a season and won the cup those 3 years. The 95-96 Wings set the record with most wins in a season with 62, but didn't win the Cup, hard to argue with that team, too.

Depends. The best single-season team or the best dynasty?
If you want a single season, the 1994 Rangers jump out at me. Great team, great chemistry, great leadership. They won the President's Trophy and the Stanley Cup, as well as a few other player-specific awards like Richter's All-Star MVP or Leetch's Norris Trophy.
If you want a dynasty, you can't go wrong with the Oilers of the 80s. They had everything a team could want, and won 5 Stanley Cups. Many of those players are Hall Of Famers now - Gretzky, Messier, Fuhr, etc.

A team as a whole, history wise, i'd say the Habs.
Idividual years or eras though, pick any one of the dynasty teams, we all know who they are.
Or more recently the 96-98 wings, also the well paid for 2002 wings....the 2001 Aves...94 Rangers.
I'm not as old and wise as some on here, so this is just what i have witnessed and read.

Greatest team? The Montreal Canadiens, hands down!
But as far as dynastys go, you could make an arguement. I was only born in '82, so I didn't see much hockey until the mid-80's, but I'd have to say the greatest dynasty I've ever seen was the 80s Oilers.

The 1991-92 Pittsburgh Penguins who finished the playoffs on a 11-0 run, winning the final 3 games after being down 2-1 to the Rangers, and sweeping both the Bruins and the Blackhawks.
This team featured Hall of Famers or soon to be ones in:
Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Ron Francis, Tom Barrasso, Larry Murphy, Joe Mullen, and Brian Trottier.
They had guys that would kill you with their scoring ability of their physicality in Rick Tocchett and Kevin Stevens, and tough as nails D Ulf Samuellson.
That was an awesome team.

Hmmm... I'd love to see a "tournament" involving these teams...
Montreal Canadiens from the '70's (the team that only lost 9 games)
Edmonton Oilers from their prime in the '80's
New York islanders prime early '80's
A Boston Bruins championship team from early '70's
Philadelphia Flyers championship team from the early/mid '70's
The best Maurice Richard Canadiens team

The 70's Bruins with Bobby Orr,
The Rocket's Habs,
the late 80's oilers,
the early 90's Pens (can't go wrong with Mario, Francis and Jagr On one team...)
I think that about covers it..

The Canadiens of the late 1970's had great offense, great defensemen, great goaltending and great coaching. No wonder they lost something like eight games out of 80 one season. They could play the game any way you wanted. I'll take my chances with that group.
