I have a red eared slider and it looks like its not getting enough calcium because of the faded edges of the shell. For an extra calcium can I just go to a walgreens and pick out one of those calcium supplements for humans and give it to the turtle? (one tablet is 500mg of calcium)

Just feed it a lot of greens, except for spinach, and get it a cuttlebone, the kind they sell for birds. The turtle will nibble on it,and get calcium from it.Just leave it in the water. Also, put it outside to get some sunshine for about 5 or 6 hours a day.Get a kids swimming pool, fill it half full of water, and put a few bricks in the middle for the turtle to haul out and bask on.This will help his shell.Feed a commercial turtle pellet everyday as well.Frozen pinky mice and feeder fish have calcium, too, because the turtle eats the bones and all.

Feed leafy greens like mustard greens and dandelion (I use organic baby spring mix greens) for an extra boost of calcium. Buy a cuttlebone (in the bird section) and let it float in the tank. Your turtle will chew on it when it needs extra calcium. You also need to invest in a UVB light. UBV helps your turtle make Vitamin D3 which lets it process calcium. Without D3 the calcium that you give it it useless.
Make sure that you replace the UBV light at least every 6 months because after time, even if the light is still working, it will not produce UVB anymore. I hope that this helps and good luck!
