1) Depends on how you do your back-up. Restoring an obsolete backup may exclude any updates/patches, so your system may actually be vulnerable.

2) Trojan can come from anywhere, especially email spams/attachments. So watch that e-card from a friend.
According to antivirus firm Sophos,United States (along with China and Russia) is the worst for malware hosting and spam relaying.

"Statistics reveal that in January 2006 spyware accounted for 50.43% of all infected email, while 40.32% were emails linking to websites containing Trojan downloaders. By December 2006 the figures had been reversed, with the latter now accounting for 51.24%, and spyware-infected emails reduced to 41.87%. This trends looks set to continue into 2007 and beyond."

3)You need both and more. AVG & Spybot provide basically different types of infection protection. Why do you think antivirus firms also sell antispyware software (often bundled into one bloated suite - like Norton Internet Security).

1. Yes.
2. Usually from file-sharing sites / clients / warez
3. No. Anti-virus programs check for both viruses and spyware, as many people do not know the difference.
