My mom suggested that we have a step by step plan for when my water breaks but I just think there are way to many scenarios, like what if my husband's at work or what if I am watching my nephew that day. It seems like more trouble then its worth. I mean we do have the basics. We make sure the keys are in the same spot all the time and my bag is next to the door.Any advice or details about your experience will help. Thanks.

Well, I dont know if its genetic but the women and my family almost always have their water break first. There were maybe two exceptions in the last 30 years, my mom says.

Basically you go to the hospital, or your midwife, for two scenarios:

1. Your water breaks
2. Your contractions are painful and less than 5 minutes apart.

Only 10% of women have their water break first. But if it does happen to you, if you've got your bags packed and your keys ready that's all you need, besides a few heavy maxi pads to wear (or a towel to take in the car).

It always helps to be prepared. Having a suit case packed and a plan of action will make a positive experience for you. No one can predict when or where the water bag will break. My water back broke in the car, on the way to the hospital. Luckily I was sitting on a cotton towel, just in case!

My water hasn't broke yet, but I just wanted to tell you my plan-- I am going to take a shower if I haven't yet, and kinda walk around the house a little so the less time I might be in labor at the hospital! LOL clean up a little, I don't want to be going to hospital all nasty! So good luck with when your water breaks!

Yes, we had a plan for when I went into labor. Its not for sure that your water will break before labor, a lot of women's don't. But when I called for my husband he walked in and said, "what do you want, did your water break or something"
when i said yes it did, He freaked out and rushed me to the hospital leaving our video camera and everything at home so after I was checked in he had to go back home and follow the plan without me.

You will still have plenty of time after your water breaks before the baby comes. Especially if it is your first. I would only be in a hurry if you were having strong contractions very close together that were very consistent. Then you might move a little faster. However, if you are in that much pain, you would be at the hospital. Good Luck!

My water has never broken on its own. A BIRTH plan for when you get to the hospital is one thing, making a plan for things you don't even know will happen are quite another. Usually we say "relax" to the moms-to-be, this time it sounds like it needs to be said to grandma... You're doing fine.

I wish to tell you thast some people say you should carry a towel witrh you just in case... but when my water broke i am sure a towl wouldnt have helped, and also just go directly to the hopital when it breaks, then you can get some meds and labor in comfort..

good luck.

you can go ahead and make up a plan of how you want things to go, have your bag packed, plan who would take you to the hospital if you water breaks and your husband isn't around (have 3 people on standby if you can). Make up a plan to that you can give to your Dr now so he/she knows your wishes (like if you want to see the birth in the mirror, if you want to go natural, stuff like that). I have to say though that for me it didn't work out the way i planned. I gave my birth plan to the Dr but when it came down to it i went into preterm labor so that changed things but my water didn't break on its own but when it did the dr tried to stick with my plan. I did have it planned out though that when i went into labor my grandpa would drive me to the hospital with my 1st and my mom would take me with my 2nd and that part worked out but my water hadn't broke.

With my mom she had planned that my dad would take her to the hospital but her waterbroke early in the morning right as he got to bed so my dad said forget it and went back to sleep for awhile and my grandpa drove my mom. So yes plans change but it doesn't hurt to have some plans especially on call people in case you need them.
