Technically, an iPod is a MP3 player ;) But I know what you meant. Well, as another user mentioned, iPods generally force their iTune software on you. It makes for an easy means of obtaining music legally and makes the transferring between computer and iPod pretty simple. Although there are ways around this, they require "hacking" the iPod and are not very practical. Also, iPods have dominated the MP3 scene for some time and most accessories out there are cater to Apple iPods.

There are alternatives to the iPod, one including the self-proclaimed "iPod killer," the Microsoft Zune. I own one personally, and it gets the job done. But like an iPod, the Zune makes you install it's own software (Zune Marketplace).

Some other considerations may be a smaller scale MP3 player, like a Sandisk or Samsung. While these may not be as versatile (like video playback), they do the trick. I own a small 1gb Samsung player and it is great for working out. It is not bulky and can be put virtually anywhere. Another plus is that it did not come with software. It was plug-and-play. It was as simple as moving files on your computer!
