A metric/standard ruler will have etches on both sides, one in inches and the other in centimeters. Those are the two systems of measurement according to length. The metric side has centimeters and the etches will be closer together, while standard is in inches and the big etches are farther apart. Most metric sides go down to millimeters, while standard ones go to 1/16th or 1/32nd of an inch.
