I'm about to move there in a few months and I'm dying for some good clam chowder. Having ate some when I was a wee lad in Oregon many years ago, I thought it was fresh and tasty. So where exactly can I find good clam chowder in Portland?

Jakes famous is famous for a reason, thier clam chowder is top notch as well as thier seafood. If your talking about in town. I prefer fresh clams to caned which is what mo's served. I found thier soup lack luster and watery. In cannon beach there's a place called morris's fireside, thier clam chowder is thick creamy with large fresh clams which have been expertly cleaned(no grainy sand)

You asked for the best clam chowder in Portland? And you
didn't specify if it had to be in a restaurant, right? Well hubby
and I feel we make the best clam chowder ever. We have
yet to find any restaurant making it as good as we do, right
here at home. So why look anywhere else? But we're across
the river in Vancouver, Washington.
Mo's used to be known for their clam chowder. They even
market it in stores. But it's been a major disappointment
when we've had some at their location south of Cannon
Beach. There used to be a great spot in Florence, Oregon
near the ocean south of Lincoln City. But I haven't been down
that far in 30 years. I haven't eaten at Jakes in years, and I
was in my 20's when I was last there. We don't like the
absence of convenient parking, and hate the higher traffic
downtown. So it's never on our list to go downtown anymore.
Well when you get to town, give us a holler. And who knows
maybe we'll have you over for a taste of our special chowder
one of these days.

I'd agree that the good stuff you had in your childhood was probably on the coast. I would suggest Moe's (Cannon Beach and Lincoln City) or Pelican Brewpub (Pacific City). As for in Portland, I try not to eat seafood inland if I can help it, but I have heard good things about the Friday soup special at Pizzicato (downtown, sellwood, fremont, and more), which is always chowder.

Like others have said, Jakes or Jakes Grill has good chowder, the Harborside also had a decent chowder.

Yes that's it ! Many true chefs would tell you that there's only one that meets the true definition of a chowder, and that's the New England version.

Moes on the coast is the best. However in the city you might not find it. Newport bay makes a pretty good one.
