Well, before I attempted to play more then the occasional pond hockey I thought figure skating was ridiculous.
When I was in High School I took power skating classes with a figure skating coach. It was a humbling experience to say the least. I have the utmost respect respect for figure skaters.
Over the years I've played with a lot of girls/women who grew-up figure skating. They definitely have a different skating style but they have great balance and usually make awesome defensemen.
Sure they wear funny outfits and a lot of glitter, but hey they can literally skate circles around most hockey players.

Funny -- one time I asked an NHL player how he got started in hockey, and he said it began with figure skating when he was 5 or 6. He turned to hockey a little bit later.
It's obviously not the most macho sport around. On the other hand, I'm surprised at how much attention it gets in hockey circles at the Olympics when the women's singles comes up. I'd bet many NHL players have sisters who gave it a try, and thus have no hard feelings against it as a sport ... even if men's figure skating probably would draw a negative reaction.

All I know is that I, as a hockey player, do not enjoy the sport. I am not a fan and yet I recognize that virtually every figure skater could skate circles around any hockey player. In hockey the skating skills are developed as a function of the game and not just to become a better skater.
Figure skating takes skill and is impressive and yet is not my cup of tea.

Me myself being a hockey player I hate them! They dig up the ice and if people that work at the ice rink don't see the holes then hockey players can get hurt in them. My skate got stuck in the middle of a game and i popped my knee out of place because of a hole.
Also it might just be girl hockey player but figure skaters hated me and other girls on my team because we play hockey and because we play with all guys!!

Not a huge fan. I think if you let them all skate at the same time and give them some sticks and pads. Maybe put a couple of goals on the ice. Then they can use those sticks to hit a small rubber cylinder into those goals. This would be interesting. We could call it.... Hockey!

I also agree with what Zap said. I took power skating for many years - taught by a figure skating coach, but designed for hockey players - and it made a huge difference.

Great....only when Jaime Sale is skating. lol
Actually, Zap's got it right on the money. Those two figure skaters in the first two Ducks movies had the basic theory down pat. All those moves are just extras to make the films more exciting and has no use in the game.

I just love the way they put massive diggers in the ice and dont patch their holes.
Next time the puck hops over your stick on a perfect breakaway pass, thank a figure skater.
Seriously though, many rinks couldn't stay open without the support of figure skating, and vice versa, so I guess it is a necessary evil that we all have learned to accept.

It's actually a great way to improve your hockey skills. Your overall skating and balance could be greatly improved through figure skating.
