I've heard that NASA has actually managed to get a form of a hyperspace window open but can't keep it open long enough to really do anything useful. Is this really true, and how would it work?

No physical basis for such a claim. The idea of hyperspace may have been invented by science fiction author E E Smith in his Lensman series. It was adapted as an interesting feature of the original Spacewar computer game programmed in 1962 at MIT by Steve Russell and others.

Hi. I don't think they have opened a window quite yet, but maybe Vista will come to the rescue if they can get the drivers right. http://www.answers.com/topic/hyperspace-theory

They might have, but if they have it is still a secret! More likely, faster than light travel would have to transport you to your destination instantiantly rather than over a period of time! The only sci fi show or movie I can recall doing this is the revised battlestar galactica, though!

NASA has never done such a thing.
