What a bunch of misinformed answers. The Cuban school system is pretty darn good with secondary education being free as well. Throw them to the lions-baseballers are treated like kings?
The easiest answer is that it is not that much different from th Dominican althought the population is only like 11 million. I have been to Cuba 6 times and their are ball diomonds everywhere and they are playing everywhere. They breathe it like Canadians with hockey (weather wise as well) and being Communist, they can't ply their trade elsewhere. A few defectors but most of these guys play together all the time.

I always bring down my extra gloves, bats and cleats and they treat me like I am God when I give the stuff to them as gifts. Cuba is a beautiful country with the warmest people that I have encountered in any Caribbean country.

Its warm all year long so you can play baseball year round long. And whatelse are you going to do in a communist run cuba. Unless you like to rebuild 1957 chevys. And plus i wouldnt want to piss off Castro if you said uhm, no I'm not playing baseball this year.

Because they are Communists. They test the kids at an early age, and what they are good at, they make them spend the rest of their lives practicing. They even make them live at baseball camp when they are young. It is so pathetic!

Baseball in Cuba is like basketball in urban-America. All the kids grow up thinking it's their ticket to fame, fortune, and the U.S.

Well, baseball is king down there. It isn't like in the USA where you have hockey, football, basketball, and baseball.

Baseball is what everyone plays.

Plus, would you lose if they were gonna throw you into a lion cage?

Because they play for the love of the game and not for money like all the whining little capitalist babies we have here.
