no to first question, yes to second.... America's Most Wanted, Cops, 24, etc, are all propaganda shows for law enforcement and government. The police men on "Cops" violate their rights on every episode, they only show the scenes where the criminal TALKS to the police instead of using his rights, and the criminal never gets away. It also conditions Americans to be treated the same way. If that show didn't exist, people would be very upset with their police encounters because it would not be what they expected. This is how they have been able to get away with militarizing the police.

America's Most Wanted conditions people to tell on their neighbors, friends, and to always be on the lookout for bad guys, creating the illusion of a need for more police. Giving people the illusion of living in a country full of criminals and violence gives the government the pretext to create a police state. That is why the media constantly reports on children missing and abductions. Do you think that this is a new thing?

Before you know it, this country will be a full police state. (it already is a partial police state).

No, they are not deterents, but you gotta be impressed by the # of criminals America's Most Wanted has been responsible for. Cops is just plain fun to watch. To Catch a Predator rocks! And many of the dummies caught DO watch the program. One of the guys actually conversed with the "minor" on Perverted Justice in detail about the show! Duuuuhhhhh!

Think about it, not even the death penalty itself is a deterent. If it were, people wouldn't be killing each other.

No, it just makes people fear their neighbors. And it makes people fearful of almost everything.
The media (especially local news) reports the really bad crimes more. Because it sells.
Even though the facts are that violent crime was at a 25 year low, you'd think. by watching AMW, that violent crime was at an ALL TIME HIGH!
But don't let the facts cloud your judgement.
Stay scared and you'll do anything.
