Hi,
you could do it with your own camera. It depends on the image you want to project. Remember that your headshot is your business card. If it doesn't look professional, it is a reflection of how you are perceived. To hire a photographer costs money, but it is an investment.
Check out this page of some suggestions. I had my headshot photographer write it. He's one of the best in the business.

And in my 36-page free ebook: What It Takes To Become An Actor, you will see a little spread of the evolution of my headshots over the past few years. Just go to the site link I gave you above or here below my name, sign in and you can save it to your computer.
Good luck!
Tony

Go to a photogrpher that specializes in actor headshots.
If you don't know where to find a headshot photographer ask your actor friends.
Legitimate headshot photographers specialize only in headshots. You can also ask your acting teacher for the names of headshot photographers.

You can use your own camera and take your own picture HOWEVER it needs to be in sharp focus. No fuzzy pics!
The background needs to be a neutral (gray, etc) color, as if it were shot in a photo studio in order to be taken seriously.
The pic also needs to be on photo paper, not just printer paper (again, if you want to be taken seriously).
All of this will not help you get the gig, but any shortfall will take you out of the running. Remember, this is all perception. If they think you won't cut it because of a bad photo, the money you saved by doing it yourself won't get you that gig.

I don't think you should take shots of yourself with your camera because that seems very unprofessional... There are actors/ actresses who have professional headshots, and that gives them an advantage over you during an audition.

Depends on what kind of headshot you are needing.......
commercial or print or......????
If it's commercial, you want as much of your personality to come through as possible........
