Has this started happening all of a sudden or have you been experiencing these painful contractions for a while now?
If it just started it's possible this is labor. Maybe you should time the Braxton-Hicks contractions. If they seem regular and are getting closer (less than 5 minutes apart) then changes are good you are in labor.
But it could just be painful BH contractions. For many women they intensify greatly later in pregnancy - and yeah, they can hurt really bad almost like the "real thing." And yes, the back pain is perfectly normal esp. if you are 38 weeks along.
With my last baby I had very painful BH contractions but they never became regular. This went on for a few days. And then I went into labor for real.

I was just in the Labor and Delivery the other night with what I thought was contractions. Period like cramps, lower back pain...anyway I asked the nurse about the difference in Braxton Hicks and Contractions...the nurse said they are the same thing except Contractions hurt worse. So if you are in tears you need to go to the Hospital NOW!!! Like ten minutes ago...I wouldn't be asking this on here....go now!

When your belly starts to tighten, write down the time. When it tightens again, write down the time again. This is how you time your contractions. If you are having regular contractions that are roughly 5 minutes apart, you may be in labor and should call your doctor. If the contractions aren't that close, then drink some water and lie down on your left side. Don't drink any juice or take any sugar -- that will make the baby more active! Good luck -- soon you'll meet your little one!

Sounds to me like contractions. When your belly tightens that is a big sign of a contraction. Just time how many minutes are in between each contraction. If they are coming and going in a consistent pattern than they are more than likely not braxton hix.

If the contractions are consistent in timing (meaning every 4 minutes, etc.) you are in labor. If they aren't those are braxton hicks. I am 21 weeks and every time I have a bhc she kicks like hell. It's normal. And back pain is normal too. Try to relax and if you seem to be getting alot of contractions it's time to start timing them.

It sounds like contractions to me! Braxton Hicks will go away if you change position, or if you get up and walk around. Real contractions will continue on.
It sounds like it might be your time. Congrats and best wishes!

That sounds like honest contractions to me. Time a few to see how far apart they are and then call your OB to let them know. Depending on the regularity of the contractions, your OB may ask to meet you in their office for a quick check, or they might tell you to go straight to the hospital to be admitted :) Either way it sounds like the real thing.

If the back pain radiates forward then it is supposed to be actual contractions. You might want to call your obgyn if it is hurting that badly. Try changing positions or showering to see if it lessens the pain.

as stated before..... if it hurts that bad... see a doc.... it is back labor... and if it isnt easily "walked off" then you need to go in and have your contactions timmed by the meter... Good luck!!! I THINK YOUR GONNA HAVE YOUR BABY!
