A bowl of clean water with liquid dishsoap in it (Add water first so it doesn't suds up). Leave a light shining on the bowl in the dark. The bugs cannot work their way back up through the soap...too thick.

OK listen and listen very very carefully. i run a farmers market for a super grocery store. i have always had run ins with the fruit fly species. Get a clear brand new professional spray bottle, fill the bottle up half way with water. Then go find some distilled vinegar, add 8 tablespoons of distilled vinegar to the spray bottle. Voila, mist the areas lightly with this mix and watch them not come around anymore.

Get a small-necked bottle. Add about 2-3 inches white vinegar, 1tsp lemon juice, 2 tsp sugar and mix well. After this is mixed well, drizzle about 1tsp dishwashing liquid on the surface. The citrus/vinegar/sugar will draw the fruitflies in, the dishwashing liquid increases surface tension so they can't get out once in and they will drown. It is harder for them to get out of a small-necked bottle once in. Once some die, don't empty it---it's like decoys--they see others there and fly right in to investigate what they may be missing.
