no they cant track down an ipod

Not unless you know who stole it. The thief can just download the itunes software and claim it as his/her own. He won't have your library as each ipod is assigned to only one computer.
Sorry. You just have to get a new one.

only if it's recovered. but having a serial number and proving that the serial number belongs to you is a different matter.

only if you know who took it and can get an officer to make a report or escort you to the person to see if you can get it back.
if not no, so keep an eye on it and don't leave it around where someone can take it

i'd assume if you know who stole it and they wont give it back you could use the serial number sorta as proof [not saying that it would work] but i dont know if they'd actually look for it.

call the cops and file a police report, but they wont look for it. you will have to. try to look at pawn shops around where you stole it. don't tell them it was stolen, just ask to see some i-pods. when you find yours, call the police and have them send you an officer to sort it out.
