Something must be bothering him, babies are precious and believe me they grow up way to fast. Hold your baby , I never let my babies cry, He will feel if you are stressed or if something is wrong, just know this will pass, and things will get better but just love him and hold him and let him feel secure in his mothers arms. 4 months is young, I would not leet him just cry. Could he be teething already???

There may not be anything "wrong" with your baby, but he's probably crying for a reason, even if he's just bored or tired. Sometimes babies even cry just to burn off some extra energy, so it's not bad to let him cry for a bit. But if it persists I'd look into the issue further. Maybe he's teething. My son got his first 2 teeth at three months. But I'm sure that could make him very uncomfortable. Maybe try checking to see if he has a mild fever; that could be an indication of teething and that might explain the fussiness.
Good luck!

I just posted this on another persons question but I took a child psychology class last semester and was shocked to learn that babies from 0-6 months do not have the ability to think as complex as "let me cry and I'll get attention" at this age they need something, even if it is just to be held.

A baby isn't a machine, you don't just fill its tank and wax its chrome and let it sit in the gargage. If a baby is crying they need something, even if its just love. If he's fussy when you play with him, it could be that hes becoming overstimulated. Try swaddling him and holding him close, or a bath sometimes does the trick. In any case never let your baby sit and cry.

I personally can not let my son just cry ever no matter what. He is 7 days old! Maybe your baby just wants some extra attention. Studies show that babies who are paid more attention to and not left to cry have less problems later in life such as trusting and security plus several other things..

A 4 month old doesn't cry if there is nothing wrong. Infants are not capable of cognizant thought - he doesn't know how to manipulate. He's not crying because he's spoiled, or because he needs to "let it out", etc. He's crying because he NEEDS something.
Hold him, rock him, sing to him, lay him on his belly and rub his back - whatever it takes. But he needs to be comforted, not ignored. If you ignore him and he eventually stops crying, it will only be because he has exhausted himself, not because he has learned to "self-soothe". 4 months is WAY too young for that.

he may be teething if he just started crying
No if you need a break there is nothing wrong with setting him in his crib for 5 or 10 min
It's not good to let him just cry it out he is still to young for that but at 6 months you can start to do that I have a strong willed son and had to do that He is now 9 months and happy

try just holding him, "dance" with him, sway/ rock back and forth, the movement should calm him. i would definitely invest in a sling...worked wonders for us. check out http://wallababy.com or http://mayawrap.com
Ebay also has some good deals...new or used.
just remember babies cannot be spoiled. they do not know how to manipulate you. when they cry, it means something in their world is wrong and they need you to fix it...even if it's just to be held.
"I feel bad letting him cry"
you feel bad b/c that is your motherly instinct, to comfort your baby...listen to your instincts, they're there for a reason...
i know how difficult it can be, sometimes you just need a minute to yourself...is there anyone to help you? can you hand the baby to his daddy for a 1/2 hr while you take a bubble bath? (my fave part of the day =D)
good luck!

Yes, you have tended to the necessary
basics...but what if your baby wants
YOU? what if he needs to talk to you--
his mother? What if he needs to hear
your voice?and the way words come out
of your mouth? What if he would like
you to take him for a walk so he can
get some fresh air? What if he's plain
afraid of this new world and needs
some protection from you?
He also needs sights/sounds/faces/
colors/music. His brain needs stimulation!

Your baby is old enough now that he needs to learn to settle himself down sometimes. There is nothing wrong with letting a baby cry it out. If you always pick them up and settle them down they will always expect that and this will in turn create a bad habit and a much higher maintenance baby. Trust me I have three children of my own. Of course you don't always want to let a baby cry it out, but if you know everything is fine and there is nothing wrong with them, it's actually a good idea at his age.
