Here's why I think people would say that: If you are past 16 weeks then you are not in your 4th month any more - you are past it. So you say you are 5 months pregnant or "in your 5th month."
Hope that helps! I know it can be confusing.

Different people and different websites have different ways of counting..my way of counting is 4 weeks for every month so if you are 17 that's 5 months 1st week
4wks X 4months = 16weeks so add a week and you are in 1st week of 5th month...when you are 20 weeks you will be in the last week of 5th month and 21 weeks you will be in the 6th month. That's how I do it. It's all confusing. You're pregnant 40 weeks so if u do 4wks/month that's 10 lunar months but you're only 9 months pregnant the whole time b/c there are more than 28 days in each month. Plus they count from the day you started your period and so that's 2 weeks added when if fact you were not pregnant those two weeks.
Congratulations by the way.

Here's the math:
A week is 7 days, only one month of the year has exactly four weeks, average month is 4.3 weeks.
So, a pregnancy is 40 weeks or about nine months, nine months works out to just under 40 weeks.
The 40 weeks is from your last period, so when you find out you're pregnant because you have missed a period, you are already 4 weeks pregnant by the doctor's terminology. (assuming a 28 day cycle).
A rough due date is 9 months plus one week from last period. I had a period on New Year's Day, got pregnant, my due date was October 8.
If your last period was say, April 3rd, you can use calendar months and on August 3rd say you are starting your fifth month.
Because a month is more than four weeks, it really makes no sense to say you are 4 months and 1 week. Either say you are 17 weeks along, or say you are IN your fourth month. (or fifth). In three weeks you will be half way through the pregnancy, assuming you get to full term, which most women do. It really makes more sense to go by weeks, as all the info that is out there is in terms of weeks.
HTH and congratulations!

You're right. In What To Expect When Expecting, they consider 17 weeks to be the last week you're in your 4th month. Week 18 STARTS the 5th month (for whatever reason). Either way though, you wouldn't be a full five months until week 20. I don't think it actually matters. Most people count by weeks instead of months anyway. I use months when I'm telling guys I'm pregnant. They seem to be able to visualize that time better than they can with weeks. :)

Some people calculate pregnancy months in lunar months. Then an average pregnancy would last 10 lunar months. If, you are like most people, assuming to be pregnant for nine months, then 17 weeks is a little over 4 months. So you might say, I'm in my fifth month but not 5 months.

17 weeks does not equal 5 months. A month does no equal 4 weeks - but more. Look at your conception date and figure your month from there. If you conceived on April 1 - you are 4 months.

honey you will deliver your baby at 40 weeks which is at The tenth month but we like to call it at the end of the ninth month. every 4 weeks of pregnancy is a month so 16 weeks is 4 months. between 16 and 20 you are entered your 5 th month but did not complete it yet , when I was pregnant I would not call it The 5 th month until I complete the 20 weeks. so It's your choice. some women do that so they feel that they are in more progress then they're actually are :-)

4 weeks to a month, that is the usual assesment...
4 moths and 1 weeks is what your is... 5 months is 20 weeks...
The pregnancy books can be very confusing, and some doctors can be too... just ask your docter which scale they use so that you are not confused with thier assesments.
Good luck...
