Yes, it does hurt when they stick the needle in your back and they left a bruise on me. My sister (like you) actually heats and fears needles, and she cried when they gave her the epidural.
Have you considered an unmedicated birth? There are SO many techniques for coping with the pain of labor. You can email me if you have more questions or need some good tips.
All the best to you and baby!

You may feel something like a bee sting then absolute rest after that. What you might want to do is wait until you are in good hard labor before you ask for it since you are afraid of needles. I didnt hardly feel mine. But afterwards the labor was alot easier and totally painless.I even fell asleep. It numbs you so you do not feel the actuall birth or the labor . I have had 3 already and preg with #4 and will do the epidural again, without thinking about it.
Good Luck
Due with #4 in October

You may feel some mild stinging and pressure while the needle and tube are being inserted. In labour, the epidural numbs the nerves that carry the painful impulses of contractions from your uterus to your brain. Once the epidural is in place, you are usually aware of your contractions but they will not be painful. Its common for the epidural to cause a severe headache.

yup epidural is hurt, and same like you, I also a big baby when it comes to needle, but when you start feeling the contraction, you won't give a crap bout the needle. when i had mine, they had to do a few time because either the tube or the needle was not in "the right place", but once they got it you will feel a little bit tingling or presure, you will still feel the contraction but not as bad as before.
gud luck!!!.
