Philosophy is the study of ideas: ethics (right and wrong), metaphysics (what is life and death), and epistomology and logic (what is knowledge, and the principles of reasoning).

The philosophers stone refers to the alchemical search for a magic substance that conferred long life and wealth on its owner. Alchemy combined chemical experimentation with metaphysical belief, but eventually evolved into modern chemistry.
