If the only problem with the modem is the link light, then most likely, the cable is somehow unable to be connected physically, due to damage / debris, or the configuration data for the modem has been lost. The best thing I can recommend is to unplug the cable modem, locate the reset button (it's very small), and push it in with a pen or paperclip for approximately 30 seconds. Then, hook it back up.
Contrary to popular opinion, it is neither difficult nor expensive to purchase a new modem. Comcast provides a list on their website of compatible modems, and I purchased one for less than 15 dollars on eBay, including shipping and handling. I probably saved at least that much in one year for modem rental fees. Almost any new modem from RCA will be compatible (those are the kind Comcast usually provides, anyway). Once you purchase the modem, you simply hook it up and give Comcast the MAC address on the bottom. Within a few minutes (after you finally get through to them), you will be back online.

the "frying sound" is not promising. unless the board is clean and dry, you wont really know if it is a bad unit now. If somethign truly was fried. you need a new modem. And... Comcast only supports a few of them so you are basically on you own without getting anotyher one of theirs. I suggest.... you take the modem to their custoimer service center and say "it just doesn't work anymore"... get a new one and start over.
chances are the customer service rep wont have the service call history available from your previous call.
oh and.... the reset button suggestions are worthless. Comcast would have alreay had you do that at least twice.
Good luck.

No, it wasnt installed on your computer to begin with. You simply set it up with your computer. Depending on how old their equipement is tho in your area, you may have some comcast software on your pc in programs. You can uninstall this. You will also need to call comcast and give them the mac address of the new modem so they can connect to it.

Liquids and electronic equipment are the worst mix you can have as you have just learned. The modem is truly fried. Smoked and all types of not working. Cost more to fix it than to buy a new one. Best of luck and next time set up the physical position up high where liquids can not be spilled on it.

If it's brand-new, you might get away with calling warranty service for the modem manufacturer and telling them about the malfunction and frying sound with adding in the part about the applesauce. They *might* send you a new one if your manufacture date is very recent. Good luck.

This is the reason why leasing their Cable "modem" is a great idea. It doesn't matter what you did to it. If it died, they have to provide you a new one. Take the existing apple sauce fried unit to their local office and say "It doesn't work, please replace."
They will provide you a new one.
On the other hand, if you bought your own Cable "modem", then you will need to go buy a new one.
