8600GTS beats 2600XT in benchmarks and actual games here:

In a few games, 2600XT was only good at low resolution.

If you get the Radeon go for the 2600XT otherwise get Nvidia because thos two i would say arent much different. check out tomshardware.com to compare video cards

Nvidia by a mile. You can usually tell by looking at the numbers. higher numbers indicate a newer series of video cards.
