Well what is hood.. Improper English, cursing, Ebonics?? If that's what you mean then I'm sure there's a way to keep it real without using all that. I'm not saying talk like Uncle Tom but like you have sense. You don't want your kids to grow and communicate with professionals or others sounding like an uneducated idiot. Not only is it embarrassing but it will not get you far in life (job wise, maybe more)

She just doesn't want it to become a bad habit in front of the kids. Just think about school when they're around. Try to remember that what ever your kids say in school is probably going to be what they've learned at home...in school I was put in the hall for a week until i learned how the pronounce the "k" in ask and desk. It's fine for you kids to speak however they want to when they're with family, but teaching them when to use "appropriate" lingo is the most important thing. It'll help them in the long run.

The notion of 'talking hood' being 'Keeping it real' is plain childish. Growing up talking hood as your natural language form will relegate you to being judged as uneducated and uncouth for the rest of your life.
What aspect of 'talking hood' is real? It is an affected form of speech that labels the speaker with nothing but negative connotations.
Teach your children what language is, how it works and how you need to speak to achieve your ends. I know plenty of highly paid engineers, not one of them talks 'hood'. Yet I see it on McDonald's staff all the time. That should tell you something.
Your diction matters,

What are the benefits of "talking hood"? Why would want to expose your kids to this? Ideally parents want their to do better, to be successful--talking hood and keeping it real is not going to help them become a better citizen.

Talking 'hood' in front of your kids is a very poor decision. Your wife is correct in asking you to speak appropriately, not only because you should take a dignified position in the home as a father, but because she wants her children to learn to speak correctly so that they can have success in their own lives. Language is vital in getting ahead in this world!! If your children learn to speak rubbish, then it will put them very far behind other children in their learning habits. the first thing you have to do is to stop THINKING in 'hood'. you need to start reading good books, classics, poetry...even read them to the children! This is a wonderful opportunity for you both, to not only learn, but to bond together, to laugh together. I think this would be one of the best decisions you could make right now. Yes, read to your children!!

Stop talking hood and start talking dad, that is keeping it real. Unless you plan on leaving your wife and abandoning your kids, and skipping on child support. Then keep talking hood.

this is exactly what Bill Cosby keeps saying. If you teach you kids to talk that way it will be harder for them in the real world. In the business world you do not hear that kind of talk but working at McDonald's you will.

DOES REAL MEAN POOR AND UNEDUCATED?
How about teaching your kids to speak a real language that will help then in their future, so they won't ever have to "keep it real?"
Start by teaching them the difference between AXE and ASK

you can be real without acting dumb... there are plenty of people who grew up in "da hood" that can speak english that isn't riddled with slang and stupidity... that is of course, unless all you're worried about is looking cool to your buddies
