Smaller dainos are a good choice. They are a schooling fish, however, so even if you only start with one or two, they will do best in a group of 5+. You can add the others later if your tank has the room. They are one of the hardier species for cycling a freshwater tank.

Platys, danios and mollies are pretty hardy fish for cycling tanks with and can usually survive the ammonia and nitrite spikes involved. Convict cichlids would also do fine, but they are semi-aggressive and will limit your future choice of community fish. Just make sure to start with no more than a pair.

Convict cichlids are a good choice. They are small, cheap, and hardy. Considering they survive (which they most likely will) then you are left with some pretty nice looking fish. You could use 2-4 of those depending on your tank size.
