On the deepest level, we wonder if we can still 'perform' - in a number of ways.. And whether we like it or not, we better get a leg up on the rest of the aged who just roll over and die. NO he's-or you-will not have the "earth shattering climax's" for ever, but what good, does happen is; Your a "greater" value because you can make it last long as you want:) You can try to run with the kids, and look like what you are,,,, or slip into "Wisdom"

My sister (over 50) always says.... "Every day is a good day, when you wake up on this side of the grass!"
Honestly, write them a birthday note with ideas they may have never thought of.... like taking a class in something they loved as a kid, traveling, finding a new hobby....even better if you join a class or go travel with them. I did this for my Mom when she retired, I came up with 101 fun things she'd never done -- lots of which she had always wanted to do. It helped her out and gave her something more to look forward to than sitting on the porch - knitting.
Besides.........50 isn't old! My kids won't leave the house till then.......... I'm already making plans! LOL

You look great today! You know I almost didn't come to Aunt Gerdie's 70th birthday party today, but you know how important that milestone can be.
(A joke at Aunt Gerdie's expense)
You look great, are you ready to partay? Are your gorgeous grandkids here? I can't wait to see them.
Is that your black jag outside? Aunt Ethel! I didn't know you had it in you!!
You know what Uncle Bob just told me? They're planning a surprise birthday for Aunt Gertie. He says she's turning 110!
You're still beautiful, we all still love you, nothing changes but the number, look how many people showed up to celebrate you, you're a pillar in our family, you draw everyone together!

Tell them to be glad they're not dead, paralyzed, abducted and raped, being murdered, starving in Africa,
Your friend sounds like a shallow vain person.
Tell this older person to grow up, get a grip and quit feeling sorry for themself.
How could you be depressed about God giving you another birthday?
Give me a break!

By assuring them that they're still blessed with health, good family, friends, etc. That it's not the end; that it's just beginning. Their existence is a celebration, a gift.

Agree with them and listen to what they say. Chances are they regret something that they should have done or not done when they were younger. You can help by listening. Don't offer advice.
