We know the Jennings and the Vezina are the top two awards, for goalies, but what Sawchuk did should be recognized.

Just so you, the Vezina recognizes shutouts, I don't know if the Jennings has the lowest G.A.A, but they should recognize that for the goaltender who posts that in the playoffs, cause Sawchuk did that in the finals against the Habs early in his career and won the Stanley Cup.

How about an ironman award for most minutes played in a season? Anyone asked to pull the kind of load that guys like Brodeur, Luongo, and Turco are asked to do each season should be rewarded for it. With over 20 professional seasons it would seem appropriate for a guy with the longevity of Sawchuk.

EDIT-
Although I agree with Oilers answer below to an extent and it is a good answer, a little devils advocate for you and Bob:
Hasek had 8 shutouts last year, why? Because he was unbelievable? I watched almost every Wings game and unfortunately- no he wasn't even great, he played on arguably the best defensive team in the league, and consistently faced under 20 shots per game while playing in the easiest division in the NHL.
If the league were to give a shutout award, I think it can be argued that such an award should go to the entire team as it takes a complete defensive effort and a little luck for a shutout.
Like I said, shutouts do seem most obvious, but I would like to see an ironman type award at both the forward and goaltending positions.

The Vezina is not just for the number of shutouts, its the award given to the goaltender deemed the best at the position as voted by hockey writers. In other words, like the Hart, Norris, and Lady Byng its a subjective based award.

I agree with the answers above that an award in honor of Sawchuk for most shutouts in a season would be great. Like the Jennings, it should be a statistical based award.

Vezina trophy is a great tradition, and is a good idea, but it's subjective.

jennings is GAA

i agree w/ those who say that an award for shutouts is skewed. Depending on the type of defense, it awards the team more, vice the goalie. Frankly I think the Jennings leans this way also.

I like the idea of most minutes played. But I’d suggest one exclusively for save percentage. It’s hard to pad that stat.
Or have dual winners from each conference voted on by the players. (that way a clear cut best goalie in the east doesn’t overshadow 2 very closely contested great goalies in the west).

The only trophy that would make sense being called the "Terry Sawchuck Award" would be for the goalie leasing the league in shutouts. Sawchuck is the only goalie to reach 100 and stands at 103. The only goalie that could threaten his title in the coming years could be Martin Brodeur sitting at 92. It would be interesting to have that award but since there are already 3 awards for goalies (Jennings, Vezina, and the lesser known Roger Crozier Award for lowest GAA), it is doubtful to become an offical award.
