Youk is a great player but underrated? Maybe...
The players, coaches, and baseball people in general actually have great respect for Youk. He was one of the prime examples in the book Moneyball after all.
The general public (including ESPN) however tends to focus on only the top 3-4 players on any 1 team and Youk isn't that on the Sox. I think in the public's eye he may be a bit underrated. For example, how many people know that although he came up as a 3rd baseman, he's the only regular 1st baseman in the AL who hasn't committed an error at 1st this year?
I'd say overall, he's a bit underrated (outside of Red Sox Nation anyways).

No, I don't think he's underrated at all. I think he's just a decent player. Yes, he's hitting .307, but his home runs and RBI's are nothing special, just like last season. He's making good contact this year, striking out only 55 times, but he doesn't run. Youkilis is a supporting player, nothing more. He takes pitches, helps to wear down the pitcher, and gets on base for Ortiz and Manny. I say he is a supporting player because he isn't the kind of player who teams rely on to carry them.
Also, to prove my point, look at Robinson Cano of the Yankees. He struggled for the first two months, had a decent June, and his numbers are still almost identical to Youkilis's, look at the average, and RBI's. The fact that Cano had a bad first half and has the same numbers as Youkilis should show that "YOOUUUUU" is pretty average. Also, even though Youkilis is just in his second full season, he is already 28, so he isn't going to get much better than he already is.
Also one more telling sign that Youkilis is just another player---the Red Sox were very interested in Mark Teixeira. Where was Teixeira going to play? He was going to play first, so the Red Sox could get more production out of the position.

Not only has Youk been underrated and overshadowed by the "stars" on the Red Sox but Dustin Pedroia also has shown alot of promise and both are making great contact with the ball and producing runs, which is what the sox wanted out of them. I'd put them both in my top 3 sox at this point in time with Ortiz being the other.

All Red Sox players are overrated, with a few exceptions like Manny. I have never heard anyone underrate him (Youkilis) until I saw this question.

Lateley?
If anything he's not hitting as good now as he was before.
He's been basically as consistent as you can get this year. And ya he is underrated...He is one of the best Red Sox players right now and he plays with a fire that yu just can't teach.

He is a good player on a very good team that has a lot of stars that get most of the attention. Because of this he would have to be considered underrated.
