This was said by my sisterinlaw whom I love dearly, but feel my obligation is to my grand angel. Should I talk to her, overlook ignorance to keep family peace, what? I know there are family who are upset my child has a black baby...If they only knew her,the curls, the smile, the I.Q., ...the joy she has brought to us. I swore to her in her first breaths of life no one would ever hurt her if
granny had any say in the matter..I keep my promises!!!

It is a term based on the color of someones skin and therefore some people can be sensitive to it. If you don't feel comfortable with it then you can tell your sister-in-law just that - that it just focuses on color and not how TOTALLY beautiful your grandchild is.

You should be proud of yourself taking on the role of this child's protector. Even "grand-angels" need their own special Guardian Angels too...

Perhaps your sister in law is just ignorant and was not intentionally making a slur. But I would be offended. I think "high yellow" is a racial slur.

I would tell her either to accept and love your grandchild or you are disowning her till she does. This child doesnt need family to hurt her. She will find pain later with strangers unfortunately. So stand up for her and tell that woman you will not tolerate bigotry racism and ignorance!

She was just talking about the baby's color. She probably didn't mean anything bad by it. I wouldn't confront her over it, I've heard that saying a lot and it was never used hatefully.

high yellow means you are light skinned or have a yellow tone. It is not exactlty a recial slur but i wouldn't want to be called that.

I get offended being called red-boned because i am also light skinned. I think it is just calling you out of your name basicaly.
