Seriously-- I've personally known three in real life aside from several TV/movie characters and at least one joke including a character named "Special Ted" though I've never met a non retarded guy named that? What gives?

Okay, you young folk especially have trouble with statistics, rules/exceptions and the like, so I have to go into extra explanation. No one is saying AAAAALLLLLLL retarded guys are named Teddy or non-retarded guys are NEVER named Teddy. I'm simply saying that, for a relatively rare name in this day and age, a conspicuously high number of retarded guys seem to be called that. I think, judging from several of the answers here, and personal anecdotal evidence in life, I'm not the only one who's noticed that trend.

It's just a coincidence, nothing more.

Generally Teddy is an endearing name for a man given by his family. Perhaps you simply haven't met enough people named Teddy, such as Teddy Roosevelt (for whom the teddy bear was named). The name Teddy Bear comes from one of Theodore Roosevelt's hunting trips. There were several other hunters competing, and most of them had already shot something. A few friends of Roosevelt captured a bear cub and told Roosevelt to shoot it. He refused, and it became a topic in a comic strip. A small town toy shop owner saw the cartoon, and asked the president if she could manufacture stuffed bears named as "Teddy's Bears". He approved, and the name has stuck ever since. So perhaps those you have known named Teddy weren't "retarded", just dancing to the beat of a different toon.

They aren't. They're usually named Theodore or Edward,(go figure.) They tend to use "Teddy" rather than their full names, or the nicknames Ed or Ted, because it's easier to pronounce in the dialect of "Duh."

It's not universal. Teddy Roosevelt was by all accounts a pretty smart guy. And Teddy Kennedy used to be fairly intelligent before he pickled all of his brain cells.

There's a Ted in my neighborhood, don't know him that well, but he has a perfectly normal mental capacity.
It could be the fact that Teddy/Teddie is a Greek name that means "gift of God," and most mentally disabled people are considered "special."

Ha! I did know a Teddy that was like that. That's weird. But I'm sure not all of them are retarded.

I have known just as many named BOB!
Billy is another good retard name, but I don't know why?
I think it is the part of the country you live in. Parents love their children NO MATTER what, so fine names, and popular ones are given to ALL children, no matter what handie cap they have!
