My mother lives in a really rural area where neither cable nor any of the big name phone companies have ventured yet. Her rinky dink local phone company doesn't offer broadband, and even though she has Directv, the satellite internet is ridiculously expensive. I know Verizon Wireless offers a wireless internet "card", but apparently it only works with laptops and she has a PC.

Any suggestions?

You might be stuck if there's no broadband service that covers her area. And even if she had that, it would be pricey some plus the connection speeds wouldn't be that great. But probably acceptable to her.

If cable is not out where she lives yet, she's really in the wilderness. And I agree with you, satellite is a bit expensive and the upload speeds sluggish. Plus you generally have to buy our own equipment upfront and have a professional installer to hook everything up.

I've seen some rural communities work together with their telephone company to lease T1 lines brought into the area and then setup a wireless system that the group shares and helps pay a monthly charge to use. But that takes some technical team-spirit to accomplish and a willing telephone company that wants to help.

I hate to say it but the best option so far is to see if Verizon's wireless card will work with your PC, ask, or go with a notebook. But I would first find out if the signal is good where she lives even if she had a notebook.

Good Luck!

you'll have to find out if Verizon or Sprint or such a wireless internet provider even offers coverage where your mother lives. If they don't, she's sol for now.

{daughter lives up the hill in Vermont ... no broadband, no cell phones, no etc. because they're behind the mountain from the nearest towers.}

if they say they do, ask them to verify that it actually works from mom's front yard ... a techie can do that with his laptop from his truck.

if all is still go ... you can buy a PCI card that lets desktops use PCMCIA cards from outfits like newegg.com [my preferred source] and install it yourself. software, if needed, comes on CD and then mom might have broadband out there.

I have no idea what such service would cost though ... don't need it where i live.

[added] avoid the satellite product. all signals have to travel up to the sat and down from it ... that's 23,000 miles each way. it therefore induces lag in the system of at least 1/5th second ... twice that if her requests go thru the sat as well [some systems send your requests via landline -- lots less lag but a lot smaller pipe].

well if you can get mobile/cell phone reception out there then you can get a wireless connection for your home PC, I know this because that is what my mum has at her house and it has got fairly good speed.... What they do is come out to your house and put up a mast so you can receive the Internet. So take a look around on the net maybe and see if there's any Internet company's that do wireless Internet that's not for laptop :)
