I am looking to partition my harddrive so I can install Ubuntu without wiping out windows. I dont know how to do that so I need answers. Also if you can tell me the pros and cons of XP and Ubuntu (i am a gamer) so I can decide which one to keep I would appreciate it. thanks

If you are a independent gamer i would go with XP, But if you are playing a lot of LAN or Net games i would go with Linux (Ubuntu). The Main Con with Linux is if you want to play a windows game on Linux you need a Emulator like WINE. This however does not allow as much memory as Windows Itself. By Partitioning i am presuming you are resizing so that you can dual-boot (Two Operating Systems on One Computer) whereas i would recommend resizing.

If you don't want to re size the disk through DOS or Windows, i am presuming this is because you have no operating system.

I suggest that you Boot From Disk using Ubuntu and Find a Resizing Tool or use Ubuntu's Prompt.

Also if you are resizing, I'm not sure that you can re size without formatting (Deleting all Data on The Disk Completely).

I had the same problem when i had to re size to install Ubuntu.

It is not Required to re size although it is VERY Recommended. This is just so that if The Second Partition of the drive dies, you can recover most files using the First Partition and then repair the Second.

Hope this helps.

specialized software like Partition Commander [not free, alas] and its competitors can sometimes create new partitions without disrupting existing partitions.

I do not know which of them like ntfs drives.

you'll likely want to read reviews somewhere like PCMagazine to figure out if any of these are worth spending hard cash on.

No matter how you put a new partition in what you have on the drive will be GONE
