Sometimes I smell natural gas near our fireplace logs. I seem to become very drowsy when in this room for an hour or more. I never burn the logs and I can't seem to tighten the shut-off valve anymore. Any suggestions?

Using a gas cooker oven with coal gas used to be a popular way of committing suicide in the UK. I understand it´s less so now that we use natural gas though whether this is due to to unpleasant smell or there are other reasons I don´t know. What is for certain is that gas is extremely dangerous and if you can´t fix this problem yourself then you should call in a gas fitter. One thing you could try is make a mixture of soap and water and wet any connections with this and if you see bubbles you know that there is a leak.

Yes, a natural gas leak can not only make you drowsy, if you go to sleep from it you probably won't wake up. Get a gas company tech out there and have them check the area for leaks. They have a sniffer tool that will detect the smallest leak, then you can get it repaired by a qualified technician and be safe.

Yes. Turn the gas off to the house and get a professional to check it out. I had 3 cousins to die years ago because of the same thing. I cannot stress how important it is not to take this lightly. ( not to mention the leak could suddenly get worse and cause an explosion.)

Call a profession repairman like Now! Yes gas will make you sleepy, it displaces the oxygen and you die of asphixia (lack of oxygen) This is not a DIY repair and should only be done by licensed professionals. Your life, your family's life and your home depend on you! Call the man!
