It's 2.38 am. They are squawking away. WHY????

Yes, they sleep. They could be squawking for several reasons though I've never heard them do that in the night (and there are quite a few around here). One possibility is that there is a predator close to their nest & it is an alarm call (which warns other seagulls & other creatures).

It is likely that they are doing the rounds looking for food scraps left over when people throw away bits of burger buns, chips etc, after nightclubs have closed. This is likely to be around 2.30 to 3am.

Near where I work (I do nightshifts) gulls come by around 4am picking up scraps, before the roadsweepers clear it all away.
