Actually, your milk is remarkably similar no matter what you eat.

You want to be careful what you eat because your body automatically will steal from YOU to make your milk perfect for your baby. That means if you aren't eating appropriately, your body is the one that suffers.

It's best to eat a varied diet to make sure that your body gets all the vitamins and minerals that it needs.

That being said, you can pretty much eat whatever. Atkins only works because you end up eating fewer calories--just like every other diet. Don't limit calories too much, try to eat around 2000 a day. Your body burns 500 calories a day making milk, so if you stick to 2000, you'll drop the weight easily.

The Atkins diet is never safe, even for diabetics. The South Beach Diet is a more well balanced diet and works well for diabetics and people trying to eliminate the simple carbohydrates. As a breastfeeding mom, you need to eat like a pregnant mom, varied diet, lots of water and veggies. Your baby needs you to eat fats, grains, veggies, fruits, meats and dairy foods. It is important for you to have a nice complete diet for nutrients. If you are concerned about losing weight, I have breastfed three babies and here is what you need to know. You will use A LOT of extra calories making milk, but you will spend A LOT of time sitting too. Eat well, eat healthy and find a few minutes here and there to exercise and you will lose the baby weight. After the baby gets older and doesn't need as much time, you will be able to exercise and real get a good workout and then the weight will start to come off. Don't assume that breastfeeding alone will do it but don't starve your baby of nutrients just to lose some fat. The best thing you can do is drink water, drink when you are thirsty and avoid the nasties like soda as much as possibe (don't kill anyone just because you are trying to stifle a Diet Pepsi craving). The Atkins diet has been shown time and again to cause serious health issues so it is better to find another pre-packaged diet if you must but it is best to just eat right and avoid what you know you should. Good luck, talk with your doctor about weight loss and breastfeeding.

From what I've heard, a better question might be 'Is the Atkins diet safe'. Anytime you are completely ignoring an important food group, you've signed up for trouble. I've had friends go on that diet and yes, they did lose a lot of weight but they paid a price. Upset stomachs, loss of hair, etc etc... I think what happens is that your body starts to cannibalise itself. It doesnt get all the nutrients it needs, so it starts to turn inwards and eats up muscle along with fat.

I'm guessing you want to get those pregnancy pounds off ASAP, I know I sure did. Guess what, breastfeeding by itself will burn around 500 extra calories a day... so it's like going on a diet without ever eating less! You NEED to eat a balanced diet - for your health, as well as for your baby's. I lost all 30lbs+ I gained with my girl before she was 6mths old. That's very common for nursing moms, so before you go all crazy trying to lose weight just give it a bit of time. It'll happen!

It's really not that safe for anyone to do (way too much high fat involved) so I would not think it was safe for a woman who is breastfeeding. If you'd like to lose weight and do it in a safe and well balanced way you could try Weight Watchers, they even have it where you can join and do it on line; it costs less but you still can lose the weight; you just don't go to meetings. They also say as a breastfeeding mom, that losing a pound a week is what you should aim for; nothing more than that.

The Atkins diet is never safe.

As any reliable doctor or nutrionist will tell you, any diet that completely cuts out any catagory of food is unhealthy.

Atkins cuts out carbs, but a lot of those carbs are good, pasta, brown rice, whole grains... they're all good for you and esstential for your body.

It also tells you that because you're cutting out carbs, you can eat as much grease or fat as you want, which is a heart attack waiting to happen.

However, if you are still determined to use Atkins, I would wait until you're done breastfeeding, baby needs the nutrients from the good carbs right now.

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular "fad" diets out there. Go here https://tinyurl.im/aHLxA

The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it's just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it's a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true

NO, the akins diet is not safe for anyone, much less someone who is breastfeeding.
your body needs the carbohydrates for energy. If the body does not get the carbohydrates, it will start breaking down the lipids and proteins in your body. You need your lipids and proteins for things such as healing, DNA replications and cell division. If you want to loose weight, just count your fat and calorie intake each day. Limit your calorie intake to 2000 - 1500 calories per day and 60 grams of fat. Your body will be burning more than 2000 calories because of breastfeeding so the pounds should come off
