Here I think you really referring to the purpose of our being alive, purpose for the universe, etc. The question presupposes a Creator who creates for a purpose. So the answer is to seek God.

“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell

When someone says that meaning is what you make of it, they are referring, not to purpose, but to feelings of self-worth. Feelings are not a problem for philosophy because there is no reality behind feelings. There are various psychological techniques for getting feelings, e.g. the power of positive thinking. You can even get your feelings from a pill.

We get asked this question on Q&A every week don't we?

Anyway, the answer is very simple, but also way too profound for most people to properly understand

and it's simply that there is NO meaning.

Why should there be a meaning? Animals ask for no meaning, only humans ask for meaning, purpose, and reasons, because we are so egocentric.

There is NO meaning, all there is is TO BE, to exist, to continue - if this can be labelled 'meaning' then that's what it is - but most humans can't accept that truth. It's only when you release the ego that you understand what I've just written and when you do you'll be FREE.

What is 42, anyway? I once asked a similar question and got the same answer. Is it code for something?
Anyway, if you can't figure out the meaning of life then it may be safe to assume there is no meaning. Join the existentialist movement, and live your life to the fullest.

The Meaning of Life is a film by the Monty Python team.

The Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is 42.

It's as close as you're going to get to answer I think... ;-)

Life, the Universe and everything have no meaning outside of themselves. This is a false question for that very reason. The meaning of the Universe is simply the Universe.

i dont think there is a defined meaning. its whatever you want it to be. but its best that you find one, because a person without purpose wont get very far. for me, i dont focus on anything that came before or will be after, i just live in the now. and live life to gain experiences from it and to basically have the time of my life while i can.

This answer can be found about three inches behind your naval. Focus your energy there for a few minutes every day and eventually you will be able to get outside of yourself for the briefest moment and in that moment you will comprehend the universe and all that is in it !!!

The meaning of life is to be a respected and productive member of Earth life.
The meaning of the universe is to create new planets and solar systems and a chance for new life.
The meaning of everything, well that's beyond me.
