you have to understand that led zeppelin is from many years ago, it's kinda like you had to be there, some young people like it and some can't relate to what we called great music, everyone has their own opinion and if you don't like it then thats ok.

You had to be there! Back then there was no Def Leppard, Twisted Sister, or Quiet Riot to compare it to. Go back and compair it to the top twenty songs of 1972. Not that they are bad songs. But giving your taste what would you have been listening to.
1. Rock and Roll part II - Gary Glitter
2. American Pie - Don McLean
3. Lean On Me - Bill Withers
4. Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
5. I'll Take You There - Staple Singers
6. Precious and Few - Climax
7. Let's Stay Together - Al Green
8. Coconut - Nilsson
9. Schools Out - Alice Cooper
10. Me and Mrs. Jones - Billy Paul
11. Layla - Derek and the Dominoes
12. Goodbye To Love - Carpenters
13. Burning Love - Elvis Presley
14. The Candy Man - Sammy Davis, Jr.
15. Operator - Jim Croce
16. Horse With No Name - America
17. Nights In White Satin - Moody Blues
18. Anticipation - Carly Simon
19. Saturday In The Park - Chicago
20. Get On The Good Foot - James Brown

First of all the song came out in 1975. It was the first time the world had ever heard Hard Rock/Metal before and the Zep was definitely the predecessor to everything like the spandex metal of the 80s that you mentioned.

Next, I would suggest what some other folks have already said. People have different tastes. Listen to the musicianship instead of the absurdity of the lyrics which always remind me of Lord of the Rings, and crank it way up. Next, if you like Guitar Hero, the solo at the end of the song should be signal enough that this is a guitar player's song. Lastly, listen to the whole song and not just the first minute like most of the new generation do. I'm not saying you did, but it has become a trend.

I'm 24 and didn't really get the song till I got older. Most of all, just enjoy music.

Okay the mighty rock gods are angry at you right now seriously...Led Zeppelin was the pioneer of Hard Rock. They were crazy and paved the way for bands like Def Leppard and Twisted Sister. You have to listen to other Led Zeppelin music too like No Quarter, House of the Holy, Black Dog, Over the Hills...I mean the list could go on for days...Kashmir, Ramble On, Communication Breakdown

When I was a youngster back in the 80s!!!... Led Zeppelin was classic rock. Now Def Leppard is classic rock. Go tell Def Leppard that Stairway to Heaven is not good and I'll bet they will be too polite to tell you what they think of you!!!! Kids today!...

i beleive the answer you are looking for is....

Led Zeppelin DOES really "say" hard rock/classic rock. the bands YOU describe are 80's metal, NOT classic rock. theres a huge difference. as far as 80's metal goes, they are goodbands, but then again, most 80's metal sucks. so in reality they are OK bands. zeppelin is however, one of the best classic rock bands ever. if you dont like em now, dont worry, you will grow to like them as you get older, hopefully. because its just great music. def leppard, twisted sister and quiet riot are alright i guess... i mean... for what they are. but youll grow to like better stuff, dont worry man. lol

Stairway to heaven is not the only song LZ did.
Have you heard Kashmir?
The others are correct- It was a different time, but even today it would be cutting edge. Most songs from then have to be amplified and equalized to get the quality that is there.
Each bar of music is so perfect.... it is just heaven.
Thats my opinion, but don't close yourself to the possibilites.
LZ has an eccentric style that includes blues, classical, (country) sorry there, not a big fan of the style or song, folk, eastern. etc. These guys love music and it shows because they are great musicians.

If you want Zep doing hard rock, listen to their first two albums.
Your spectrum is a bit too wide also - there's a big difference between late 60's/early 70's and 80's. There's even a big difference between early 60's and late 60's, or for that matter, early Zeppelin and late Zeppelin. The most common criticism of
Stairway is that AOR radio just played it too damned often.

get a new brain and a new set of ears, maybe then youll understand how empty, emotionless, and meaningless hair metal like def leppard and twisted sister were, and understand the depth led zeppelin and other bands like them have to offer

I'm 17 and feel the same dude. I wish I could answer you so I could know for myself. I always heard it's "the greatest rock song ever". I don't think it's great at all. I don't think it's even good at all. Maybe people like it because of the mysticism with it and the messages and stuff.
