There is a ban on "four-letter words" (as they are usually swearing or profanity).
It is a gentle reminder that there are good four-letter words

The song (I am assuming you are referencing the Joan Baez song) is a rationalist view of love as being nothing more than something people say as if there is nothing more to love than the word itself. The first section has the lyrics, Seems like only yesterday
I left my mind behind
Down in a Gypsy cafe
With a friend of a friend of mine
Who sat with a baby heavy on her knee
Yet spoke of life most free from slavery
With eyes that showed no trace of misery
A phrase in connection first with she occurred
That love is just a four-letter word". She has a baby with her but talks about freedom as if commitment and staying somewhere are not about an intense bond or deep emotion but just doing it. At the same time she seems to achieve happiness or content, "with eyes that showed no trace of misery". The second verse is about a woman who is talking to the 'father of her kid' and the author heard her say that "love is just a 4 letter word". Again it is looking at love as simply a state of being and nothing more. The third verse has the author disagree with the assertion, I must have thought that there was nothing more absurd Than that love is just a four-letter word". The next verse discusses the 'love that was supposed to last for eternity' and blew up in smoke. The aftermath 'falls on strangers travels free'. This goes along with the theme that love comes and love dies. A rationalist would argue that love is simply the result of all the processes that make it possible and falls apart when all these pieces disappear as well. That is what I always thought the song was about.

It is actually "Love is just a four-letter word" from the song of the same title written by Bob Dylan. Joan Baez recorded the best known version.
The implication is that the singer has had bad experiences in love and no longer believes in it. It has become a curse word to him/her.

It's a reference to the fact that a number of (in)famous rude words are 4 letters long. It implies, by association, that love is a dirty word.

Nathan is an idiot. Nathan cannot spell 'evil' backwards.
It means that loves is nothing more than a 4-letter word and is meaningless beyond that.

It means that to just say, "I Love You" isn't enough, and you've got to do something - anything - to prove that you love your significant other, especially if you screw up like cheating or betraying him/her, or telling a vicious lie that might ruin your relationship.
