"Old Black Betty" was written by Hoody Ledbetter (aka Leadbelly) in the 30s... still a great song to get the audience on their feet and going.

It's been covered by lots of bands and never fails to impress the listener if it's done well... I know... I've used it... **grin**

Nazereth? they had no sense of humor, good band, but not a once of levity in there lyrics. you mean as mentioned several times, Ram Jam, and the title is the opening phrase "Black Betty". some one before me gave you the lyrics, it's not that good of a song on paper, but I's great fun on the radio. also, Ram ZJa did not write the song, it is an old blues song going back in the 1930s or earlier, Leadbelly did it in the 1930s, and there is a beginning and ending that is different, the song as you know it was the chorus or middle of the song, that they would go back to after each o other line, and ram jam just added on to it, and dropped the other parts, expanding the chorus alone. just thought You'd like to know that bit of music history of the song.

The one hit wonder Southern Rock Band Ram Jam did the song that you are probably thinking of.

Ledbetter did do the original version way back in the 1920s. A modern band redid on the "Without A Paddle" Soundtrack.

Nazareth never ever did this song.
It was written and performed by the band Ram Jam.
