Liters measure the volumetric capacity of the pistons inside the engine of your car. Since your car has 8 of them and is roughly a 5 liter, each cylinder is about 0.625 liters in size.

the v 8 means there are 8 cylinders. the 5.0 means that if you add all of the compression area of the 8 cylinders then the volume would equal 5 liters. Think of 5 one liter coke bottles or a 3 liter and a 2 liter. you could literally take the five liters of coke and pour it into the 8 cylinders and fill them up.

Liters, in this case, refers to the volume of air that the pistons in the engine displace during one complete 4 stroke cycle sequence. Displacement if found by knowing the following:

The diameter of the cylinder (bore), the distance the piston moves from the top of its stroke (Top dead center, or TDC) to the bottom of its stroke (Bottom dead center, or BDC)( this measurement is also called stroke), and the number of cylinders in the engine.

When this data is known, you simply plug those numbers into this formula:

.7854 x bore x bore x stroke x number of cylinders = cu. in. displacement (or liters if you use the metric measurements).

There are 61 cubic inches in a liter.
