It will be the first year for so many other people too. Just go for it and if you don't like it, don't do it next year.
Good luck

Once upon a time, the town I lived in opened up a place for kids to go to a dance. I was 11, and really wanted to go, but felt sure I'd embarrass myself. Eventually I decided: 1) if I wanted to do it, I should; 2) everyone else probably felt inside just like I did. I went, and had a ball! AND, got better at dancing, because I was practicing. Further, read some of the biographies of folks in the performing arts. NOBODY starts out good - and the ones that make it are the ones that get back up again after they fall, and go at it again. Go for it, and don't look back!

If you have the ability to video record yourself, you'll have a huge advantage! You can check out short 1 act plays from the library, practice them in front or a digital camera or camcorder, and clean up what you want. You've probably got 2-5 weeks before school starts, so I'd try to get started tomorrow. Plus - the first day of the month is the best time to hit the folks up to spend money.

You are now empowered to take that secret passion and convert it into actual auditions. You might get a part and you might not. If not, keep trying. My daughter was declared unfit for the high school play so she tried out elsewhere and got three roles. One was with a community theater in New Jersey and two were in Manhattan. She was second banana in a one act play and the lead in a second. If it is your passion, go for it. I cannot hold a tune and I still go out for musicals. Does that sound like making a "complete idiot out of myself"? Guess what? I got singing roles in Charlie Brown, Barnum, and Once Upon a Mattress.

The only way to get over your fears is to DO it. Who cares if you make an idiot of yourself? The chances of that are VERY low, and besides, we are ALL idiots at one time or another! I think the only way you'll be an idiot is if you keep holding yourself back!
FEAR........F-E-A-R
False
Evidence
Appearing
Real
That's all it is. Get out there and Be who you were born to be! If you're in California, send me a PM. The other thing is this: sure, you'll probably feel like you're going to throw up (and some people actually DO).....but just go through it and get out there.......you will never regret having done it! You will only regret NOT trying.
don't live a life of regret.
Good luck!

Consider joining one of the crews for your first show....stage, sound, lighting, or if you play an instrument, join the orchestra. It will allow you to meet everyone, become comfortable around them and then try for a part in the chorus, then move your way up.
I was a stage crew member then stage manager in my senior year.
It was some of the BEST times I had in HS, and still have many many friends from that group 30 years after graduation.
Don't miss the opportunity!

Go for it!! I think you should look for an amateur theatrical group that is NOT connected to your school, or perhaps an acting school if you can afford lessons. Then with some practice, you will feel more confident to do this at your school the next year. This way, if you don't like it or aren't good at it, no-one that you go to school with 5 days per week has to know.
Also, study hard at English, which is essential for drama, so that if a play has the word "plummeting" you will recognise it.

If this is your passion, you need to overcome your fears. I watched an episode of Inside the Actors Studio and Sharon Stone was the guest. A female student asked Sharon what her biggest fear was and Sharon replied "being naked". Sharon told the student to find her biggest fear and play that part with all the emotion and intelligence she could and her fear would be conquered. Marianne is correct, dont let your fears prevent you from doing what you want, everyone is afraid of doing these things, even old pros, so go for it!

I've been there. But trust me...if you have passion and creativity and love for it and you feel like you are going to burst if you don't do a show soon. Then you need to do it. We're all scared, but don't fret! Go out there and show them what you can do and what they've been missing. I promise that if you try with all your heart, you won't fail.
A great acting coach once told me:
To succeed on stage, you must risk failure.
Go out there and risk failure, because that's the only way to succeed!

Join the school or local acting club, same with singing. You could even take singing lessons. There will be plenty of others your age with the same fears. You'll know soon enough if it is what you want to do. Go for what you want.
