Just use a soft bristled toothbrush to clean them. Just be gentle and not apply too much pressure.

DO NOT USE A TOOTHBRUSH OR YOUR FINGER ON YOUR SNAIL!! Snails have a thin layer of slime on their shells to protect them from diseases and what not. If you scrub off the algae you'll start scrubbing that off as well leaving him vulnerable. Either turn off the light in their tank for 2 days so the algae will die (this is only for tanks with just snails, no fish) or place them in a separate tank or giant bowl with the same aquarium water and keep the lights off for 2 days. If you must scrub the algae the best way is with a baby rag. They're extremely soft (for obvious baby reasons) and won't harm their shells as bad. Snails naturally rub their shells up against living plants to get the algae off, so just lightly brush up against them 2 or 3 times. NO SOAPS. NO BAKING SODA. Jut tepid water.

Plop them in a bowl of tank water and gently rub with your finger or, if you have one, an algae scrubber. Only use a toothbrush that hasn't ever been used and has been well rinsed in a small container of tank water. If you have multiple snails, then may clean each other off.

Copperhead's idea is a good one. I always thought the algae on the shell made them look more natural, and I like them that way.
