The part where the genitals are (supposedly called the vent) is connected by very thin tissue. It's impossible for me to separate the anus from the genitals to determine its gender.

There's no way I can afford a vet at this point in time (I'm trying to pay for my first apartment) but I'm really worried that something might be wrong. The tissue looks like it could tear easily (like when you have your ear pierced and you leave the earring out for a while and you have to re-poke through that back layer of skin) but I don't want to hurt my rabbit.

Thanks for your help.

KimbeeJ: Yes, it IS grown together. Those pictures show you how the vent can open but my rabbit's is sealed shut because of that little bit of skin. The anus and the genitals are touching just like it does when it's normally closed but if you try to open it the tissue holds it shut. It's like glue. I don't know if this is just something young rabbits grow out of (he's under 6 months) or if I should be concerned.

More details:
>He pees and poops normal without any blood... though I'm not sure how it's possible with them being grafted together like that.

>It wasn't always like this. When I first got him I could open the vent to check his gender (though he was - and still is - too small to tell)

I understand vets can be expensive but usually call and speak to the nurse at the vet. She usually tells me what i can do at home and then if that doesn't work to bring her in. Give that a try as you will be getting the best answer and it will only cost you a phone call. Call at a quiet time so the nurse will have more time to talk to you like weekday mornings.

You can tell the gender of a rabbit when they are around 4 weeks old, sometimes sooner if you're experienced. Your rabbit isn't too young to tell what gender he is. Where did you get your rabbit in the first place? If from a breeder, contact that person and see what they say. If from a pet store, then I'd try to contact a local breeder anyway and see what they say. Vets don't always have all the answers. Email me offline and tell me where you live and what breed of rabbit you have and I'll try to help you locate a breeder in your area.

I have had this happen one time when I accidently messed up and my hired help inbred 2 rabbits too closely,*has fired them*
Fortunatly there is a surgical fix to this,it should be not cost any more then the fee the vet will charge when they spay your rabbit. If the rabbit has trouble urinating you will have to take the rabbit to the vet before any infection starts as rabbits do Not heal well from infections.

Sounds like a virgin to me. Seriously, it's very hard to tell the gender of a young rabbit. It takes a lot of experience and then it's still hit or miss. Trust me, rabbits can tell. Quit worrying about it.
