First, can I just say WELCOME HOME to your soldier, from another military family! How far away from the Petersburg area? The city is FULL of historical monuments, etc, etc etc. A wonderful place for a history buff, in my opinion. Another option is historical Williamsburg. Good luck!

Colonial Williamsburg is a great tour and place to stay, nice too since you have been apart so long. Also in that area is Jamestown, only a few miles away. There are some of the old cottages on site within a block of the great resturants in the old colonial section that have been made into rooms with a setting room and a great view. You can book them through the colonial williamsburg site. If you have questions I be glad to help.

There are lots of places you can take him to, especially since he loves history such as Monticello in Charlottesville, Colonial Williamsburg, Mount Vernon in DC. There are tons of museums in the DC area that relate to US history as well as military history.
If you go to Monticello or Williamsburg, I recommend booking a nice bed and breakfast place (have to do it in advance, since they tend to book fast)

Antique shops. Maybe find him something collectible from some point in history.
He'd probably love to hang with you somewhere quiet, like beside a lake with goodies to eat and drink.
