Why is it no one asks why White Men are allowed to run and own casinos? Some of the most profitable casino chains in this country (Like Harrah's) are owned and run by extremely wealthy Whites.

No one says they shouldn't be allowed to own casinos or make money.

But if any tribes of American Indians try to better their people through casino money, suddenly it's a different story.

Due to the circumstances with the formation of the U.S. and the people already here, the Indians are allowed to maintain Nations with in a Nation, so to speak. It's a good idea, but unforeseen cultural characteristics have brought about many difficulties. Since these Indian Nations don't produce very much, and economics aren't part of the value system, the casinos are a trial effort to make these entities more self sufficient.

You're missing the legal issues involved.

Why don't US laws apply in Canada? Because Canada is a different country. Why don't Michigan laws apply in Ohio? Because Ohio is a different state.

Native reservations are NOT part of the state-controlled land. They are separate jurisdictions, just like separate states. They are subject to federal control, just like the states.

But one state cannot tell another state what to do, and one state cannot tell a federal reservation (whether an Native reservation or a federal territory like Guam) what to do.

So, what happens on federal Native reservations is not under the control of the states because those are legally autonomous territories. It has nothing to do with race -- just geographic jurisdiction.

wow... you do have a lot of nerve to be asking this question. as an "urban" indian who has lived in the outside as well as grew up in the inside, i am insulted by this question.

alot of people do NOT understand the struggle of being a native american. regardless of what ANYONE says.. we did migrate here FIRST hundreds of years ago, and now we are one of the smallest minority populations in the land, because of europeans bringing over diseases... giving my ancestors small pox blankets, making us walk hundreds of miles to a small piece of land the government called a "reservation".. all this among other things.

in terms of casinos, it is only an even tinier percentage of the native population who even see any of the of money that comes from these casinos. why should we be questioned for having casinos, when places like vegas, reno, atlantic city make so much money and no one is questioning their motives! i come from one of the most populated tribes, and we do not have a casino. not everyone benefits from this.

I never could understand why non skins and people against gambling constantly complain when it has nothing to do with them. WE deal with the US on a NATION TO NATION basis. THEY can not regulate us just like they can't regulate canada.
If you don't like gambling just don't go there.

Not all of us have casino's.

NOTHING IS FREE
The funding we get is in return for all the natural resources they TAKE off our lands, ei Timber, minerals, coal, water right etc. We don't even get 'fair market value'

On one hand you complain that we're 'GIVEN" all this stuff, but on the other you complain when we try to make money so we can do it ourselves.

I'm starting to think you guys just look for things to complain about.

They get free land and a lot of breaks...but 90% of them are poor and live on reservations and don't get the same rights as taxpaying citizens...so from the outside looking in - they don't have it that great
