well if you've NEVER done modeling before and this place is like a school, then it's not a total loss...at least you'll get your feet wet and have a better idea.

Don't know where you live. If it's a small town, most likely it's just a school and not the real deal. Look at their track record and also the fine print of the contract about your deposit. See if you can get it back.

If you decide that it's worth the money, then look at it as a learning experience and get ALL you can out of it, contacts, experience, photos, jobs etc.

Good luck. There are more scams in this biz than there are legits, especially in towns other than the majors, feel free to PM any time if I can be of help.

Be careful... I'm willing to bet it's a scam especially if they're aligned with John Robert Powers and Barbizon. Don't bother. What is it you want to do, model? Act? Just ask here how you get started. Ignore the rude comments and take the good advice :-) State what your location is (you said the thing was in LA, not that you were so...)

If they found you in the mall or you saw an ad in the paper or on tv or head it on the radio, keep in mind how many people want to get into this business. Then think, why in the world would real legitimate agents need to advertise for new talent when they have people banging down their doors every day?

Those people want your money. Yes it takes money to get started, but you'll likely waste a lot of it with them.

Be careful and don't get taken!!!!

I am a professional actor living in LA. My survival job is at the hotel where that convention is held. Don't even consider going. People get scammed out of many thousands and get nothing out of it. Glad your mom was heads up enough to check it out.

Trust your mother. Period.

If you want to model, put together a portfolio of your best photos. Find out who represents your favorite models and then send your best photos to them.

Young people have no business going to a large city for an "event." You will become part of a circus that becomes a magnet for creepy people, including pedophiles, who know young, good-looking people will be there looking for their "big break."

If you want something badly enough, work hard for it.

NEVER PAY ANYTHING UPFRONT!
NEVER PAY ANYTHING UPFRONT!
NEVER PAY ANYTHING UPFRONT!

Do I have your attention now?

IMTA is yet another scam to prise your parents' hard earned cash from their hands. Your mom is right to be wary. Real agents get their $ after you are hired. ANYONE who wants $ upfront is ripping you off.

NEVER PAY ANYTHING UPFRONT!

Never mind. You will do better to find an agent on your own.
