I think so, and if you're familiar with the character of Tony Stark, there is a definite parallel.

He's a good chocie from the standpoint of Tony Stark's personal demons, but physically he's a stretch (no pun intended) I'm also worried that with a 2-hour movie as opposed to a TV series, how much time can be dedicated to Tony's alcohol problems as opposed the more important story elements- the development of the armor, becoming a superhero, keeping his identity a secret?

The Iron Man armor will be CGI so that's no problem- it doesn't matter who the actor is for the action scenes. But Stark is a tall, handsome guy- when he enters the room at some black-tie affair, people notice. He has a larger-than-life presence about him, especially for the ladies. So I think from that perspective, Robert Downey Jr wasn't the best choice. But he's a great actor and I'm willing to see how he tackles the challenge. After all, it's not like Clark Gable was available these days :)

Robert Downey, addict, Tony Stark, addict. Sounds like stunt casting to get people talking. The thing is I agree Robert Downey Jr. can act so that's okay. By the way for the other answerer's, Stan Lee does not control Marvel, he is however a profit participant when they make movies ( being one of the creators of the character, he should be) . My guess is the special effects will be the star, so they could've got Martin Short for the lead and it wouldn't have hurt the box office.

I think Robert Downey Jr. looks a lot like Tony Stark although I don't think Robert has enough of the playboy charactistic. I think he will do very well in the film. Word on the street is the trailer is pretty good. Fingers crossed. I am hoping it will be a good movie. The only other person I could think that would play him well would be Ben Affleck with a goatee. He would have to lose some weight though. :)

I don't know to much about Tony Stark, but I know he's a rich corporate guy who is into defense, right? I like Downey Jr., I'd love to see that movie.

Perfect choice. That guy can act.

Plus the movie will have to deal with his alcoholism and abuse - its part of his character. Downey will finally bring some acting to a superhero movie.
