Hi all. I'm just wondering how one would become a doctor in America. I'm studying in Europe but I just missed out in a medical course in my own country. One of my teachers suggested that I try America as it isn't as difficult to obtain a place at University as there are a number of colleges that offer medicine as opposed to my own country where there are only three.

Basically I want to know what happens after High School in relation to the career....

Thanks for your help which is grately appreciated!

After high school, people get admitted into Universities to obtain a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), which typically takes 4 years. During the course of 4 years, you take classes that deal with science and fulfill what you call a Pre-Medical path. You get exposed to a full year of English classes, a level of mathematical understanding, and a whole bunch of science classes. You then take the MCAT, an examination that judges your ability to express yourself clearly and tests your knowledge of science. Students typically take this their 3rd or 4th year of college, or even after they've obtained their BS. Then, you apply to Medical school and if accepted, you spend 5-10 years specializing in some field. Then, you're a doctor! And you have to go through what you call residency, which is an unspecified term of being a doctor at some hospital.

Hope that helps! Good luck.

While many countries around the world allow you to go right into Medical school out of High School -- the United States does not. You need to get a BS -- making sure that you take Pre-Med courses. Most people major in chemistry or biology -- but any degree will prepare you for medical school if you take the right prerequisites.

In America what happens is you go to college for 4 years get good grades (3.0 or higher) and take the MCAT to get to med school. get a good score on the MCAT apply to me schools and then after 4 years of Med school you have three years of residency.
