He was a great back, more little jukes and fakes than nearly anyone else, good strength for his size( but cannot be compared to E. Smith or T. Thomas in that regard) and though his speed has become over-ratted (he was fast just not as fast as some remember) he did not need blazing speed he was quick and crafty, expert at making would be tacklers miss. I prefer larger backs like Earl Campbell or Eric Dickerson but Simpson still has to rank among the best backs ever just behind or right there with Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Smith or Dickerson. Like Payton (for most of his career) he played with very little talent around him, teams keyed on him on every down no matter what the situation and he still put up great numbers including a high average per carry. He did not have blazing speed but could turn on a dime throw a juke and had great vision and instinct. Like no other back before or after him he seemed to read 15 yards or 2 seconds ahead setting up defenders just like he was reading the future.

I wouldn't loan him my Ginsu knives, but he was a heck of a running back in college and the pros. Led the nation in yardage in '67 and '68 with 1401 and 1709 yards. Heisman trophy winner. He had a 2000+ yard season with Buffalo before being injured. 14th on the NFL rushing list.

O.J. does not belong in this group in any respect. Walter is a no-brainer. and mutually as i've got faith that Emmit belongs in this group and has the main yards in an entire life, I dont think of he's greater effective that Walter. yet, i assume that wasnt the question. Barry Sander is a definite , Jim brown is likewise a legend and held the checklist for a lot of years formerly Walter broke it. and Eric Dickerson is the final one that i've got faith merits to be in this group. Walter has i think of interior the community of 17k yards. O.J. has someplace around 10k +. why might all and sundry think of he belongs there. because of the fact he has the 1st 2K plus backyard season?

I'm old enough to remember him playing. If he were playing today, behind on O-line as good as Indy's, he'd easily break single-season rushing records. He had over 2000 yards one season. They only played 14 games in those days.

In his prime he was one of the top 5 RBs ever. Great combination of size, power, and speed.

I hear he had a killer instinct as a football player. Translated into his post football career, obviously!
