I've worked on cars since I was 15 built my first engine when i was 16(still drive it everyonce in a while i'm 31 now). I worked at a trucking co. in the shop for 8yrs and in a transmission shop for 2.But I've never been certified. I guess to the average person I would be a"person off the street". I'm not trying to give a life story, just trying to help. I've put alot of pads on different vehicles. I have never charged more than 10$ a wheel.I always checked rotors everything. If the rotors needed turning I would carry them to be turned. All the people I have done work for knew me too. So I wouldn't be offended if someone didn't want me to do something if they didn't know me because I wouldn't.So what i'm saying is if your going to pay 50$ just for pad replacment you should carry it to a good shop and don't trust someone you don't know.

Ask for references, talk to them and see how happy they are with the work. It is not that hard of a job, but what about if your rotors need turning? Can he do that too? You take a lot of chances when you have someone off the street work on your car. Especially when it is something as important as your brakes. You may be better off going with a shop to do the work, unless you know the type of work the guy does. good luck.

He may change the pads, but he's probably not going to take your rotors in to get "turned" (smoothed out). That's not the end of the world, but your brakes may start to squeek or chirp.

If he's buying the pads from a national auto parts chain, they usually will turn your rotors for free. Offer to pay him another $10 if he takes the rotors with him to the parts store where he's getting your pads. (which will be the generic organics pads most likely)

Before you have this person do the work for you. Ask him for some names and phone numbers of people that had work done by him. If he has then call several up and see what they say about his work and if he says no then walk.
