I have never heard of blue cross or blue shield in geology, but not knowing has never stopped me from answering a question before, so here goes. I can only assume that blue cross is a variant of a staurolite cross that has been altered by a blue mineral, probably of hydrothermal origin. Blue shield is harder, but I think it must be some sort of invertebrate with a shell that has been altered with a blue mineral, probably of hydrothermal origin.
